SuperDrive firmware update

superdrive-update-2-1.pngMy new MacBook Pro has been having issues with the SuperDrive.  It refused to play certain media and didn’t always burn discs on the first try.  Today my software update prompted me for a new update.  It happened to be the SuperDrive Update 2.1.  I haven’t been able to test my optical drive extensively after loading the update, but have see some improvement.  I have a disc with me that didn’t play prior to the update but plays after the update.  That sounds like good news to me.  I suppose that these firmware updates to make a difference.  I’ll do some further testing at a later time when I have access to more variety of media.

If you’ve been having issues with your optical drive on a MacBook Pro, fire up the Software Update on your machine and load the SuperDrive Update 2.1.  It should improve your drive’s performance.

Time for a change

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007 | Mac Resources | No Comments

Its been almost a year since I began this blog.  Over the course of this time I’ve made practically not changes to the format and layout.  Recently, I began looking around for a more functional, clear and simple theme.  After some time of searching the web and looking through a number of themes, I settled on ModerPaper Theme by Performancing.

I believe that this theme offers good clarity, which makes it easy on the eyes.  It is simple, yet attractive.  And it also has a three column format, which allows for better positioning of sidebar content and advertising.  So, here it is.  This blog is now dressed in a new theme.  I hope that you, the reader, will find this theme appealing.

If you’re reading this post from your email, click through to the blog to see its new look.

Let me know in the comments what you think about the change.  What do you see as advantages and what would you change?  What elements can enhance your reading experience?

iPhone Reviews Published

Several columnists for major US newspapers and magazines have already published reviews of the upcoming iPhone scheduled to be released on Friday, June 29th.  Among these are Walt Mossberg of Wall Street Journal, David Pogue of New York Times, Edward Baig writing for USA Today, and Steven Levy of Newsweek.  The reviews seem to be objective and for the most part positive.  It seems that these reviewers have been using the iPhone for a couple of weeks now.  The consensus seems to be that it lives up to most of the hype.  David Pogue says, “It does so many things so well, and so pleasurably, that you tend to forgive its foibles.”

All of the above reviewers name AT&T as the main drawback to the iPhone.  This comes mainly because of the exclusivity of the deal and the slow EDGE data network that is used by the iPhone.  The saver for the iPhone is that it comes with a built-in Wi-Fi.  When you’re near a hot spot, the phone determines which network is faster and switches to Wi-Fi automatically.

From my perspective these reviews seem to be level headed and confirm many of the expectations.  For those of you who hold Apple Inc. stock, may find that your holdings will increase in value because of these reviews.  It does seem unusual that Apple has provided iPhones to some journalists and that they have published reviews prior to the release date.  I don’t think Apple has done something like this before.  It appears that Apple is going the extra mile to promote their new gadget.

Are Macs More Expensive than PCs?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007 | Mac Resources, Mac vs Windows | No Comments

One of the things I hear Windows users say is that Macs are expensive. Many people settle for a PC because they can buy one at $600. Scot Finnie published an article for Computerworld.com examining the cost differences between Macs and PCs. He has some good comparisons. I like the article, because I think Scot has done a good work on the comparisons and it supports my opinion that Macs are competitively priced in relation to PCs. If you do your own comparison, just remember to compare similarly configured models.
