Steve Jobs writes a letter to iPhone owners who purchased the phone in the last 2 months since its release. He explains why he believes Apple’s decision to reduce the price is right. First, he says the iPhone is a great product and this is a way to make it more accessible to a wider range of people during the up coming holiday season. He says that it will be good for both the current users and new ones. Second, he states that this is the nature of technology. New products are released on a frequent basis, prices are lowered a few months after a release of a new product. However, he does express acknowledge the fact that customers who purchased iPhone early placed their trust in Apple and showed loyalty to their products. Therefore, Apple will offer some compensation to early adopters in a form of a $100 store credit for use at the Apple retail stores and online.

What do you think about this move? Does this show weakness or responsiveness and sensitivity by Apple to its customers?

Today was a busy day for Apple Inc. At the special press conference Steve Jobs unveiled a new line of iPods, which include an iPod Classic with larger storage, iPod Nano with video and coverflow, iPod shuffle in color and an all new iPod Touch. In addition, to the revamped line of iPods and the new iPod Touch with a touch screen and Wi-Fi capability, Apple reduced the price on iPod Nano by $50.

The bigger surprise of the event was that Apple slashed the price of iPhone by a whole $200. This of course is received with mixed feelings. On the one hand iPhone will be more accessible to the masses, on the other hand those who paid the higher premium feel cheated. Furthermore, the 8GB iPhone turns out to be the more popular one, and the 4GB iPhone will only be sold as long as supplies last.

If you have the time, Apple has made a video of the Special Event, which is available at apple.com. The news is also available in written form at apple.com.

There’s lots to take in and savor from today’s event. I can’t wait to lay my hands on one of them new iPods. The Nano and the Classic remind me of the Orbit gum.
